NBN Channel 4 Features MITIS

NBN 4 featured MITIS in its June 6 special edition of Pilipinas, Ngayon Na! hosted by Press Undersecretary Robert Rivera. NBN 4 is the information channel of the government-run National Broadcasting Network. Pilipinas, Ngayon Na! is one of its programs widely shown on television in the United States, Canada, the Middle East, and in other countries with large Filipino communities.
When interviewed by Usec. Rivera, School Founder Mr. Hyock Chu Kwon and President and Principal Dr. Bienvenido V. Santos elaborated on the educational thrusts of the school.
Mr. Kwon pointed out to MITIS as a world-class school with tuition fees of about 25% only of fees charged by other international schools in the Philippines. He also mentioned the very low teacher-student ratio of one teacher for every five students. Dr. Santos also singled out small classes as a distinct feature of the school’s commitment to be truly student-centered.
In describing the school’s “amazing” growth, Mr. Kwon cited the April 2009 WASC report which gave MITIS a candidate for accreditation status in less than two years of operation. WASC stands for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges which is based in California, USA.
Mr. Kwon explained that accreditation is important as it validates the integrity of a school’s program and student transcripts. Colleges and universities examine transcripts to determine if the students have attended accredited institutions. Mr. Kwon noted that there are only five schools in the Philippines with WASC accreditation.
Further interviews with the two school officials revealed that MITIS is authorized by the College Board, USA to offer Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Passing the AP examinations means that students get better opportunities for admission to top foreign universities. They also enjoy the advantage of earning college credits to make college education less expensive.
Mr. Kwon and Dr. Santos took turns in explaining the school’s scholarship program for academically qualified but economically disadvantaged students. They said it is the school’s social and moral obligation to make world-class education accessible to the qualified residents of the cities of Muntinlupa, Las Pinas, and Paranaque.
Mr. Kwon made special mention of the school’s efforts to help MITIS graduates get admission and even scholarships or financial aid in foreign universities particularly in the US, UK, Singapore, Australia, and Japan. Mr. Kwon reiterated his commitment to help students achieve their dreams.
Both school officials emphasized the importance of nurturing a culture of caring in the school. Mr. Kwon averred that only true love for students can guarantee the success of a school. Dr. Santos paraphrased Ralph Waldo Emerson in saying that the secret of education is respect for the child.
The show featured students deeply engrossed in their studies and then freely engaged in friendly conversations with their teachers and peers. Other students were shown on their way home via the escalator leading to the front door. They appeared refined, relaxed, and confident, On hand to assist the NBN 4 team in its tour of the school’s facilities were Vice Principal Mr. Elmo Purpura, Registrar and Admissions Officer Ms. Charlene Salvador, Administrative Services and Liaison Officer Mr. Marciano Rebollos, and Finance Officer Josephine Camacho.
